Alessandro Mendini's Cosmicomiche Furniture Unveiled in Milan
Alessandro Mendini has created three sculptural furniture pieces inspired by Italo Calvino's story "Senza colori" from Le Cosmicomiche. The works, named Qfwfq, Ayl, and Luna & Sole, are on display at the ALPI showroom in Milan. They are based on three archaic forms and made with two types of wood veneer produced by ALPI, reviving a pointillist decoration the designer first conceived in 1991. The black-and-white version, Pointillisme B/N, evokes moonlit nights where colors are replaced by shades of gray, while the color version, Pointillisme COL, reproduces warm, vibrant fragments from the solar light spectrum. Mendini previously used a similar pointillist technique for his famous Proust armchair, inspired by the literary world of Marcel Proust and painters like Seurat and Signac. The new pieces were presented in 2018.
