Alessandro Mendini renovates Le Corbusier apartment in Marseille

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Alessandro Mendini has been invited to redesign the interior of apartment number 50 inside Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation in Marseille, the iconic brutalist building completed in 1952. Known as La Cité Radieuse, the complex houses 337 apartments, 1,600 residents, two shopping streets, a hotel, and a roof garden. Mendini paired existing decor with his iconic objects, including the Proust Armchair (1978), the Amuleto lamp (2015), and carpets created for Joseph Carini. The apartment, owned by Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart, serves as a private residence and a design think tank. Each summer, the owners invite a designer or studio to rethink the space and open it to the public like a gallery.
