Alessandro Giuli set to become new president of MAXXI museum in Rome

institutional · 2026-04-27

Alessandro Giuli, a journalist and close ally of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, is reportedly poised to become the new president of the Fondazione MAXXI, the institution that manages the MAXXI museum in Rome. According to sources cited by TPI, Giuli would succeed Giovanna Melandri, whose ten-year mandate expires on January 31. Giuli, born in Rome in 1975, studied philosophy and began his journalism career at local newspapers before joining Il Foglio, where he became deputy director in 2008 and co-director in 2017. He currently writes for Libero and appears frequently on political talk shows. Giuli was previously considered for the role of Meloni's spokesperson. The appointment comes as the museum prepares for the Grande MAXXI expansion project, though the new government could halt it. Giuli has been vague about the nomination, declining to confirm it in an interview with Lilli Gruber on Otto e mezzo. Undersecretary Vittorio Sgarbi, speaking at a recent museum fundraising gala, expressed appreciation for Melandri's management and stated that the new presidency should work in continuity with her achievements.
