Alessandro Giannì on Painting, Pop Art, and the Apocalypse of the Hour
Alessandro Giannì, born in Rome in 1989, is a painter whose work has been exhibited at MAXXI, MACRO, the Swiss Institute in Rome and Milan, Kühlhaus Berlin, and the American University Katzen Arts Center in Washington DC. He participated in the ÑEWPRESSIONISM movement founded by Miltos Manetas and served as art director for Ovalis by Enrico Ghezzi and Emiliano Montanari, with works shown at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival. His latest solo show is "L'apocalisse dell'ora" at Albumarte, Rome. Giannì discovered painting through Mario Schifano's Pop Art, which he saw with friends during a school trip. He describes his practice as a flow, driven by vision rather than technical skill, and often reworks fragments from the internet. He sees all visual art as expanded painting and considers technique secondary to incapacity, which he calls a natural talent. His work explores simultaneity and the infinite repetition of the moment, as in "L'apocalisse dell'ora." Giannì does not rely on drawing or studio routine; painting comes from thought and spirit. He has also worked with ceramics and projections, blurring the line between painting and its image. He cites Holbein's "The Ambassadors" as a work he spiritually appropriates. The interview is part of Artribune's "Pittura lingua viva" series.
