Alejandro Campins Exhibits Bunker Paintings at Havana's CAC Wifredo Lam
From 2 November 2018 to 5 January 2019, Alejandro Campins, a Cuban artist, showcased a series of large-scale paintings of bunkers at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam in Havana. Titled 'Miedo a la muerte es miedo a la verdad,' the exhibition featured canvases reaching up to five meters in width, illustrating Brutalist-style bunkers set against barren landscapes. While the actual locations are obscured, the artist incorporated black-and-white photographs of real bunkers. Drawing inspiration from structures in Cuba, Europe, and the U.S., the exhibition delves into themes of political isolation and human alienation. The Centro itself symbolizes Havana's cultural decline. Coastal bunkers were constructed during the Cold War, some of which can be seen near Havana's Hotel Nacional. ArtReview magazine reviewed the exhibition in March 2019.
