Alejandro Bulgheroni to Build Winery in Former Tuscany Quarry
Argentine entrepreneur Alejandro Bulgheroni, through his ABFV Italia group, has begun construction of a new winery in the Bolgherese area of Tuscany, carved into a disused marble quarry. The project, approved by the Tuscan Region and the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, aims to rehabilitate the Cariola quarry, abandoned for over 30 years. The architectural design, by Studio Tori of Florence, features a 4,500-square-meter structure on three levels, largely underground with a green roof offering sea views. The winery will blend into the landscape, echoing the quarry's angular forms and colors. The project also includes restoration of three historic buildings for a production center, wineshop, and hospitality. Bulgheroni's Italian wine venture began in 2012 with the purchase of Dievole in Chianti Classico, followed by Poggio Landi and Podere Brizio in Montalcino. ABFV Italia has invested about 120 million euros in acquisitions, renovations, and replanting, with an additional 20 million planned, largely for the Bolgheri winery. The winery is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. Bulgheroni, who entered the wine business in 2006, now owns 13 wineries globally. The project emphasizes sustainability, organic production, and wine tourism.
