Alejandro Aravena Curates 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale
Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena, who was born in 1967, has succeeded Rem Koolhaas as the curator for the Biennale. Koolhaas's 2014 exhibition, "Fundamentals," drew in 240,000 attendees. Aravena's theme centers on utilizing architecture for human self-governance, organized around sixteen key "battles" addressing issues such as segregation, inequalities, and migration. The event features sixty-three national pavilions, welcoming newcomers from the Philippines, Nigeria, Seychelles, and Yemen. In total, eighty-eight architects from 37 countries are participating, with 33 being under the age of 40. The Italian pavilion, curated by TAMassociati, is named "Taking care – Progettare per il bene comune," showcasing low-cost construction across three segments: Pensare, Incontrare, Agire. Additionally, the Victoria and Albert Museum introduces a pavilion called "A World of Fragile Parts," which delves into reproduction and replicability themes.
