Aldo Rossi retrospective at MAXXI Rome explores the architect's global vision
The MAXXI museum in Rome is hosting a major retrospective on Aldo Rossi, the first Italian architect to win the Pritzker Prize in 1990. Curated by Alberto Ferlenga, rector of IUAV Venice, the exhibition 'Aldo Rossi. L’architetto e le città' features over 800 items including drawings, sketches, letters, photographs, models, and documents from the MAXXI Architecture Collection and the Fondazione Aldo Rossi, with loans from IUAV, the Deutsches Architektur Museum Frankfurt, and the Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht. The show is organized into two main sections: projects in Italy and projects worldwide, with three focus areas on Rossi's formative years in Milan, the San Cataldo Cemetery in Modena (1971), and the Teatro del Mondo floating structure for the 1980 Venice Architecture Biennale. A central spine of 40 tables produced by Molteni displays models representing 94 locations. The exhibition also highlights Rossi's relationship with photographers such as Luigi Ghirri, Gabriele Basilico, and Giovanni Chiaramonte. An inventory of the Aldo Rossi Archive at MAXXI, comprising 1,909 graphic works, 1,895 photographs, 11 models, and 30 folders of documents, is published alongside the show. The exhibition runs at MAXXI's Galleria 2.
