Aldo Mondino's Transgressive Art at Building Gallery Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Building Gallery in Milan presents 'Aldo Mondino. Regole per l'inganno', a retrospective of the Italian artist (1938–2005) featuring about 40 works from 1963 to 2003. The exhibition highlights Mondino's pioneering use of unconventional materials like coffee, candy, sugar, chocolate, marshmallows, bronze, flowers, blue Bic pens, ceramic, and eraclite (an industrial building material). His work blends art, craft, everyday life, nature, and religion with irony. Notable pieces include 'Torre di torrone' (1968), a tower of fake nougat boxes arranged in a semicircle but with no entrance; 'Untitled (La piscina di marshmallows)' (1982), a pool of marshmallows; and 'Tappeti stesi' (1990–92), carpets made of eraclite. The show also features a parody of Duchamp's bicycle wheel ('Ciclo e riciclo', 1980) and a mosaic reconstruction of Casorati's 'Maternità'. A selection of Jewish-themed works and pieces inspired by travels to Turkey, Morocco, and Palestine reflect Mondino's respect for traditions. The exhibition runs at Building Gallery, Milan, in 2023.
