Alda Farinella, the fashion visionary behind Turin's Jana showroom, celebrated in new exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Circolo del Design in Turin is hosting the second episode of its 'Archivi d'Affetto' project, dedicated to Alda Farinella (died February 2024) and her fashion showroom Jana. Curated by Maurizio Cilli and Stefano Mirti, the exhibition runs until May 10 and features a capsule collection by Serien°umerica inspired by Jana, along with archival images and video interviews. Farinella, daughter of shirtmaker Adriana Corino, opened her first Jana store in the 1980s. Her space under the porticoes of Piazza Vittorio Veneto hosted the Italian debut of Martin Margiela in autumn 1993. Her largest store at Via Maria Vittoria 45 functioned more like an art gallery. Farinella introduced brands like Comme des Garçons, Paul Harnden, Carol Christian Poell, and Vivienne Westwood to Turin and Italy. Serien°umerica, founded by Maria De Ambrogio and Stella Tosco, created a capsule of four shirts for the exhibition. Two photographs by Ivan Cazzola with the shirts are displayed at the NH Collection hotel in Piazza Carlina. IED Torino photography students produced docu-interviews documenting Farinella's story and the capsule's production. Fashion design students Matteo Giaretti and Federico Ponzo from IAAD collaborated with Serien°umerica. The exhibition includes a screening of 'We Margiela' (2017) by Menna Laura Meijer on April 4, featuring an interview with Farinella. A studio visit to Serien°umerica's atelier at Strada del Fortino 21 is scheduled for April 18.
