Albright-Knox Presents Panza Collection Exhibition of Light and Color

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, presented "The Panza Collection: An Experience of Color and Light" from November 16, 2007, to February 24, 2008. Curated by collector Giuseppe Panza over three years with director Louis Grachos and senior curator Douglas Dreishpoon, the exhibition featured 70 works by 16 artists installed in single-artist rooms. Artists included Anne Appleby, whose abstract oils evoke nature's seasons; Alfonso Fratteggiani Bianchi, with pure pigment on limestone; and David Simpson, using metallic interference paint. Phil Sims and Ruth Ann Fredenthal built color through structural layering, while Winston Roeth and Timothy Litzmann explored color framing and light trapping. Stuart Arends contributed painted cubes, and Ann Truitt presented colored columns. Max Cole's dense vertical strokes created austere beauty, and non-monochromatic works included Joseph Kosuth's neon phrases, Bruce Nauman's fluorescent rooms, Robert Irwin's acrylic disc, Dan Flavin's red light, Sol LeWitt's wall drawing, and Robert Therrien's bronze sculptures. A catalog with an essay by David Bonetti and interview excerpts accompanied the show, offering an alternative to visiting Panza's villa in Varese, Italy.
