Alberto Timossi's Red Reed Installation on Alpine Lake Addresses Climate Change

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Italian sculptor Alberto Timossi (born 1965 in Naples) has created a land art installation titled 'Fata Morgana – Dentro l’Antropocene' on Lake Col d’Olen at 2,721 meters in the Aosta Valley. The work consists of 33 floating red artificial reed elements of varying heights, designed to mimic a natural reed bed and reflect the changing light of the alpine environment. Timossi, who previously worked in the Michelangelo quarries in Carrara in July 2015, focused on glaciers and their melting, drawing inspiration from the glacial meltwater feeding the lake. The project was curated by Takeawaygallery in Rome with the patronage of the Autonomous Region of Aosta Valley and the Municipality of Gressoney-La-Trinité. Scientific data was provided by researchers from the University of Turin, in collaboration with CNR-IRSA, University of Bologna, ARPA Valle d'Aosta, Carleton University, and the Polytechnic University of Turin, who have studied the lake's waters fed by an adjacent rock glacier. Timossi emphasizes that the installation is not a protest but a demonstration of nature's ability to adapt and transform in response to human interference, describing it as a mirage that is unreal today but possible in the near future.
