Albertina Museum in Vienna mounts major Albrecht Dürer exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Albertina Museum in Vienna is hosting a major exhibition dedicated to Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), running until January 6, 2020. Featuring over 200 works including paintings, drawings, prints, and original documents, it is the most ambitious show the museum has devoted to the Renaissance master since 2003, which attracted half a million visitors. The exhibition draws on the Albertina's own collection of around 140 Dürer works, supplemented by loans from international museums: the 'Adoration of the Magi' from the Uffizi in Florence, 'Christ among the Doctors' from the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, and 'The Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand' from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Highlights from the Albertina's holdings include the famous 'Hare,' 'Praying Hands,' and 'The Large Piece of Turf,' along with studies and sketches that demonstrate Dürer's dedication to nature observation and his extraordinary drawing skills. These are not mere preliminary studies but masterpieces that encapsulate Dürer's intellectual world and his conception of nature and art.
