Albertina Modern: Vienna's New Contemporary Art Museum Opens in Künstlerhaus
The Albertina Museum in Vienna is set to grow with the launch of Albertina Modern, which will open its doors on March 13, 2020, at Karlsplatz 5 in the Künstlerhaus. Klaus Albrecht Schröder, the museum's director, spearheaded this initiative, with financial backing from businessman Hans Peter Haselsteiner, who also purchased the Essl Collection following the closure of Karlheinz Essl's museum in 2016. The historic Künstlerhaus, established in 1868, now accommodates Albertina Modern on its ground floor and basement, while the Künstlerhaus association retains the first floor. The opening exhibition, titled 'The Beginning – Art in Austria, 1945–1980,' showcases over 75 artists and emphasizes post-war Austrian art. This expansion introduces an additional 2,500 square meters of exhibition area, bolstering the Albertina's international standing.
