Alberta Zallone's 'También se muere el mar' at Museo Nuova Era in Bari

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Museo Nuova Era in Bari's old town hosts 'También se muere el mar – Muore anche il mare', a solo exhibition by photographer Alberta Zallone, curated by Rosemarie Sansonetti and Annamaria Traversa. The show explores the abandoned Château de La Salle in Burgundy, a neo-Gothic castle built in the late 19th century, looted and deserted after World War II. Zallone's lens captures empty rooms, peeling wallpaper, noble coats of arms, old curtains, two majestic but timeworn armchairs, forgotten books in a library, and mysterious windows, cellars, and corridors. The title derives from a verse in Federico García Lorca's 'Lamento por Ignacio'. The artist, who previously addressed loss after her older sister's death, delves into nostalgia—etymologically 'the pain of return'—echoing Heidegger's definition of nostalgia as 'the pain for the closeness of the distant'. The exhibition contemplates Thanatos, annihilation, and irreversible ruin.
