Albert Ayme Mini-Retrospective Opens at Galerie de Thorigny

exhibition · 2026-04-23

A new gallery, Galerie de Thorigny, has opened its doors near the Musée Picasso in Paris, showcasing a mini-retrospective dedicated to the 92-year-old abstraction pioneer Albert Ayme from February 15 to March 30, 2012. This exhibition includes three canvases and a selection of works on paper spanning from the mid-1970s to 2010, emphasizing Ayme's principle of "braiding the three primary colors." A publication featuring text by philosopher Denis Viennet accompanies the display, which reflects Ayme's unique take on Matisse's concept of "drawing through color." The exhibition highlights vibrant periods and pays tribute to Van Gogh and Barnett Newman, culminating in seven inseparable squares, an "ultimate work" that introduces a black frame and incorporates the idea of time, as exemplified by the 2010 "Septuor du bleu jaune rouge."
