Alana Collection of Italian Renaissance masterpieces debuts in Paris at Musée Jacquemart-André
The Alana Collection, one of the world's most important private collections of Italian medieval and Renaissance art, is on view for the first time in Paris at the Musée Jacquemart-André until January 20, 2020. The exhibition features about 75 masterpieces by Lorenzo Monaco, Fra Angelico, Paolo Uccello, Filippo Lippi, Giovanni Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, Tintoretto, Veronese, Bronzino, and Orazio Gentileschi. The collection was assembled over decades by Chilean-born collector Alvaro Saieh and his wife Ana Guzmán, whose initials form the name 'Alana.' The display is designed by Saieh himself, with the first section replicating the dense, salon-style hanging of their private American home, evoking 18th- and 19th-century classical collections. The remaining seven sections follow a chronological layout up to the Caravaggisti. Saieh stated his collecting is countercurrent to the contemporary art market, driven by passion rather than profit. The Musée Jacquemart-André was chosen due to the collectors' strong ties with the institution, which also houses a notable Italian medieval and Renaissance collection assembled by Edouard André and Nélie Jacquemart.
