Alain Ughetto's animated film 'Interdit aux chiens et aux Italiens' honors Italian emigrant grandparents

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

French animator Alain Ughetto has created a poetic animated feature film dedicated to his Italian grandparents, Luigi and Cesira, who fled poverty and fascist violence in early 20th-century Italy to settle in France. The film, titled 'Interdit aux chiens et aux Italiens' (Forbidden to Dogs and Italians), premiered at the 41st Annecy International Animated Film Festival. It uses a conversation with his deceased grandmother to recount their escape from the Piedmontese village of Ughettera, their struggles as immigrants, and the humiliations they endured, blending irony and poetry. The film is a co-production involving Les Films du Tambour de soie, Vivement Lundi!, Graffiti Film, and other European companies. It will be released in Italy on August 31 under the title 'Manodopera' and is part of the third edition of Cinema in Festa, promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture (MIC) in collaboration with the David di Donatello – Accademia del Cinema Italiano, offering special €3.50 tickets from September 17 to 21.
