Akram Zaatari's Exhibition 'The Script' Tours UK Institutions with Archive and Video Works
On July 13, 2018, Akram Zaatari's exhibition, 'The Script,' opened at New Art Exchange in Nottingham, running until September 9. This showcase features two installations and a new film, diving into self-representation and display methods in the Arab world. One installation, Object of Studies, focuses on Zaatari's engagement with Lebanese youth portraits from the 1950s to the 1970s, taken by photographer Hashem el Madani, co-founder of the Arab Image Foundation in 1997. These images are displayed as temporary tattoos on the gallery walls in white and grey. The exhibition also includes the four-channel video Dance to the end of love (2011), which features YouTube clips of young men in several Arab countries. Zaatari's film explores a Muslim father's struggle to pray while his kids climb on him, highlighting the challenges of sharing personal rituals online. After Nottingham, the exhibition will head to Turner Contemporary in Margate from October 19, 2018, to January 6, 2019, and then to Modern Art Oxford from March 23 to May 12, 2019. Zaatari's work blends artistic and archival elements, reflecting on self-expression across various platforms.
