Akiko Aoki's Tokyo Spring 2027 Collection Explores Solitude and Self

At her Tokyo showroom, Japanese designer Akiko Aoki presented her Spring 2027 collection, which explores the theme of solitude and the duality of the self in society versus alone. Aoki, who studied at Central Saint Martins, aimed to capture the luxury of time spent alone, a feeling she believes is vital for creators. The collection scrambles formal and casual codes: blazers are loosened with open sleeves that drape over shoulders, slip dresses are cut to rumple at the sides like T-shirts, hoodies are given sweeping sailor collars or extended into lace skirts, and some dresses are made from pinstriped suit lining. Aoki's approach to silhouette and tailoring is technically complex, requiring precision and many toiles; she often collaborates with pattern makers specializing in men's tailoring, telling them to break the rules. The jewelry, thick woven bracelets with metal and release clasps giving an industrial appearance, was created in collaboration with Berlin-based jewelry designer Ekaterina Pronina, a former classmate from Central Saint Martins. The two met in Paris last year for the first time in over a decade, and Aoki, who had admired Pronina's work on Instagram, wanted to create something together. The collection was shown during Tokyo Fashion Week for Spring 2027.
