Airbnb offers house for €1 in Sambuca di Sicilia to become host

Airbnb is offering a newly renovated house in Sambuca di Sicilia for €1 per year to a selected host who will rent it out on the platform. The initiative aims to promote slow, sustainable tourism in the Sicilian town in Agrigento province, following a municipal program launched in 2019 that sold 17 properties for €1 to foreign buyers. The selected person must be over 18, speak good English, be available to move by June 30, 2022, and stay at least three months while renting it for at least nine months. The house was renovated by Palermo-based studio Didea, founded by Emanuela Di Gaetano, Giuseppe De Lisi, and Nicola Giuseppe Andò, using traditional materials like lime and raw earth. The design features three levels with self-supporting volumes in perforated metal and a third in mirrors and mustard-colored MDF. The master bedroom and kitchen have specific uses, while other spaces are flexible. The project aims to build an international community, with past investments estimated at €20 million by ANSA, including collateral purchases in the Belice Valley and a fiber optic network for smart workers. The town, of Arab origin, was named Borgo dei Borghi in 2016.
