Ain Bailey's 'The Jamaica Project' at Camden Art Centre

exhibition · 2026-05-25

Camden Art Centre presents a major new exhibition by London-based composer, artist, and DJ Ain Bailey (b. 1963, London). Central to the show is a new commission in Gallery 3: '5C Jacques Road: Part One', the latest film in a trilogy begun in 2021. Shot on location during Bailey's first visit to Jamaica in 2025, the film explores Jamaican culture, history, and her family's heritage. The installation includes an intervention on Victorian windows to evoke the colors of the Jamaican flag, creating an immersive environment. The film features an original score with audio captured in Jamaica, alongside paintings by her grandfather Ezekiel Laws and by Gemma Romain. In the Central Space, 'Version' (2021) comprises three videos and 64 suspended Jesmonite sculptures of ackee fruit, one for each year since Jamaica's independence in 1962. The films include 'Version: Ackee', 'Version: Dub', and 'Version: Linstead Market', the latter performed by Elaine Mitchener. The exhibition runs until June 14, 2026.
