Aida Atelier's Cordmark Miyota Community Center in Nagano

architecture-design · 2026-08-17

In the rural landscape of Nagano, Japan, Aida Atelier has completed the Cordmark Miyota community center, a mixed-use building that integrates a workspace, café, kitchen, library, and areas for community activities. The project, completed in 2022, covers 185 square meters and was designed by a team led by principal architect Tomoro Aida, with design contributions from Hiromi Nakamura and Takaya Shimodaira. The structure was realized with structural engineering by Ryotaro Sakata Structural Engineers, lighting design by Izumi Okayasu Lighting Design, mechanical engineering by RS Setsubi Kikaku, and additional consultancy from Yoko Ando Design for textile design and Green Life Lab. for sign design. The general contractor was Horiuchigumi Co., Ltd. The project was curated by Miwa Negoro, and photographs were taken by Tatsuya Noaki. Rather than treating the various functions as separate programs, the design unifies them into a contemporary common space that responds to the surrounding satoyama landscape, a traditional Japanese rural environment. The building is categorized under café, mixed-use architecture, and community, and it uses Perfect Roof as a supplier. The project was featured on ArchDaily, with the original article in English and a Spanish version available.
