Aichi Triennale unveils 82 artists for 'Still Alive'; Helsinki Biennial appoints Joasia Krysa as 2023 director.
The Aichi Triennale has announced its full lineup of 82 artists for the 2023 edition, entitled 'Still Alive,' under the direction of Kataoka Mami from Tokyo's Mori Art Museum. This year’s theme draws inspiration from On Kawara's 'I Am Still Alive' telegram series, initiated in 1969, and delves into themes of uncertainty, varied values, and beauty while contemplating sustainable futures. Among the newly revealed participants are Laurie Anderson, Huang Hsin-Chien, Anne Imhof, Nawa, Shwe Wutt Hmon with Kyi Kyi Thar, and Diemut Strebe. The event will also include performing arts, educational programs, online initiatives, and collaborative projects. In another development, Joasia Krysa, a UK-based Polish curator, has been appointed as the artistic director for the 2023 Helsinki Biennial, which will be held on Vallisaari Island, emphasizing the intersection of art and the environment. Currently a Professor of Exhibition Research at Liverpool John Moores University, Krysa has previously contributed to Documenta 13 and co-curated the 2016 Liverpool Biennial, as well as serving on the advisory committee for the 2021 Helsinki Biennial. She plans to invite global organizations to contribute curatorial ideas, aiming to build new partnerships and exchanges. Krysa highlighted the importance of collaborating with collectives and research entities to learn from shared experiences and strive for transformative futures.
