Aichi Triennale 2022 titled 'Still Alive' after On Kawara, features international artists and advisors
Kataoka Mami, the curator, revealed the 2022 Aichi Triennale, named 'Still Alive', drawing inspiration from On Kawara's series from the 1960s. This exhibition showcases works by artists such as Hoda Afshar, Liliana Angulo Cortés, Jacobus Capone, and others, alongside Kawara's pieces. Notably, Kawara's practice included telegrams from 1969 with messages like 'I AM NOT GOING TO COMMIT SUICIDE DON'T WORRY'. The previous triennale encountered backlash due to 'Statue of a Girl of Peace' by Kim Seo-kyung and Kim Eun-sung, resulting in its closure and a funding loss of 78 million yen. Kataoka's team comprises international advisors and independent curators, with Iida Shihoko serving as chief curator, emphasizing themes of existence amidst Korea-Japan tensions.
