Ai Weiwei's Palazzo Strozzi Retrospective Explores Synthesis and Spectacle

The exhibition 'Ai Weiwei. Libero' at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, running in 2016, surveys over thirty years of the Chinese artist's career, highlighting his method of distilling complex themes into potent symbols and amplifying them through theatrical presentation. Curated by Arturo Galansino and the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, the show features installations, photographs, performances, and works in wood and porcelain that address issues of political dissent, censorship, tradition, and refugee crises. Key works include 'Study of Perspective' (1995–2016), a series of photographs showing Ai flipping his middle finger at landmarks like Tiananmen Square, the Eiffel Tower, and Palazzo Strozzi; 'Fairytale' (2007), which brought 1,001 Chinese visitors to Documenta 12 in Kassel; 'Grapes' (2013), a sphere of interlocking stools; and 'Han Dynasty Vases with Auto Paint' (2014), ancient vases dipped in car paint. The exhibition also features a Lego recreation of 'Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn' (1995) made with students from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, and 'Reframe', red lifeboats framing the palace facade. Ai's use of social media, including his blog (2006–2009) and Twitter, is presented as a tool for activism and dissent, exemplified by his tweet responding to Xi Jinping's 'China Dream' with 'nightmare'. The show underscores Ai's ability to provoke debate and force viewers to confront political and social realities.
