Ai Weiwei's Beijing Studio Demolished in City Redevelopment

According to The Art Newspaper, authorities provided minimal notice before beginning demolition while the studio still contained numerous items. Ai's assistant Ga Rang reported that workers started breaking windows without prior warning, leaving many possessions inside. The artist confirmed the demolition through Instagram posts, bidding farewell to the space. This action follows broader patterns of art space removal in Beijing, including last year's demolition of Heiqiao village studios and recent gallery evictions in Caochangdi. Authorities aim to replace these areas with commercial developments like malls and office buildings. Ga Rang expressed regret, noting that such unique artistic environments cannot be replicated elsewhere in the capital. The Zuoyou district has seen multiple art spaces demolished during Beijing's ongoing urban transformation initiatives.
