AI Tools Help Non-Native Speakers Learn English Neologisms
A study published on arXiv (2604.23842) evaluates AI support for non-native speakers (NNS) learning English neologisms for cross-cultural communication. In a human-subjects study (N=234), NNS participants learned neologisms with AI assistance, then wrote messages to native speaker (NS) friends and judged contextual appropriateness. Three AI conditions (Definition, Rewrite, Explanation) were compared against a non-AI dictionary. AI Explanation yielded the best outcomes in communicative competence and appropriateness judgments.
