AI to Curate Bucharest Biennale, Sydney Biennale Reopens Early, Christie's Seeks Damages Over Picasso

other · 2026-04-20

The 2022 Bucharest Biennale will be curated by an AI algorithm called Jarvis, which will utilize deep learning to select pieces for a virtual reality exhibition, transitioning online from its initial opening date of 28 May under curator Henk Slager. On 1 June, the Biennale of Sydney, themed Nirin, reopened, showcasing 700 artworks by 101 artists, under the curation of Brooke Andrew. Christie's insurers are pursuing nearly $20 million from T.F. Nugent due to damage caused to Picasso's 1943 self-portrait Le Marin, which is valued at $100 million. Criticism has arisen regarding the Humboldt Forum in Berlin's plan to install a Christian cross, a decision supported by culture minister Monika Grütters. Larry Kramer, known for his activism and playwriting, passed away; his notable work includes The Normal Heart. Johny Pitts received the Jhalak prize, and Krist Gruijthuijsen's contract at KW Institute has been extended through 2024. Employees at the Philadelphia Museum of Art are forming a union. The Amsterdam Gallery Weekend is scheduled for 18–21 November, while the Hong Kong art fair Unscheduled will commence on 17 June.
