AI-Powered Monolith Brings Göbekli Tepe to Tokyo

exhibition · 2026-05-04

A six-meter-tall monolith covered in LED screens is now on view at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. The installation, created by the US-based studio Ouchhh, uses an artificial intelligence algorithm to process data from Göbekli Tepe, one of the world's oldest archaeological sites in Anatolia, dating to around 9500 BCE. The AI generates images and animations that play across the monolith's surface. Ouchhh describes the work as an attempt to connect past and present, asking what would happen if the oldest data consciousness about the origins of the world materialized in a hybrid public art project. The studio emphasizes that they are not a data visualization firm but use data and AI to create art, aiming for a dark, epic, and cinematic experience for future life.
