AI-Generated Sham Local News Sites Proliferate Across Florida and U.S.

An investigation conducted by The Florida Trib and KCRW's Question Everything uncovered a network of fraudulent news websites generated by AI, including the South Florida Standard, which was established by Drew Chapin. These platforms invented fake reporters, engaged in content plagiarism, and had ties to a reputation management firm based in Philadelphia. Chapin acknowledged managing 17 websites throughout the U.S., generating over 3,500 URLs and drawing 44,000 visitors to enhance search engine credibility for clients. As of June 2024, NewsGuard reported 1,265 of these "pink slime" sites, surpassing the number of daily newspapers. Following inquiries, the South Florida Standard was taken down. Chapin, previously a startup CEO who pleaded guilty to fraud in 2021, now leads The Discoverability Company. Experts caution that these sites pose risks to media credibility and democracy.
