AI-generated music fraud targets indie artists on streaming platforms like Spotify

Fraudsters are using artificial intelligence to upload fake music to streaming platforms, generating millions in revenue while harming independent artists. Indie musician Tara Nome Doyle discovered this firsthand in February when her manager received a confirmation email from Spotify about upcoming releases on her official artist profile. Doyle had no new music scheduled. Checking her Spotify account, she found five tracks listed for release the next day. The artwork featured AI-generated versions of her last album cover, confirming a deliberate fraud attempt rather than a mistake. This scam highlights how AI technology enables nearly perfect crimes in the music industry. Streaming platforms like Spotify are affected, making it extremely difficult for artists to defend themselves. The incident was reported in the German publication Freitag.
