AI and robotics reconstruct shattered Pompeii frescoes in RePAIR project

The RePAIR project (Reconstructing the Past: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Meet Cultural Heritage), supported by EU funding, has wrapped up a four-year study at Pompeii. This initiative utilized AI-driven robotics to piece together fresco fragments from the House of the Painters at Work, which suffered damage in 79 AD and during WWII, as well as from the Schola Armaturarum, which fell in 2010. Robotics teams constructed the system at Casina Rustica, while AI specialists created the algorithms for recomposition. Initiated in September 2021 and led by Ca' Foscari University of Venice, the project collaborated with the Italian Institute of Technology, Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Bonn, and Ben-Gurion University. Professor Marcello Pelillo emphasized the project's fusion of AI, robotics, and archaeology.
