Ahmed Mater Mid-Career Retrospective at Christie's London
Christie's in London is hosting 'Ahmed Mater: Chronicles,' a mid-career retrospective of the Saudi artist, curated by Ridha Moumni, chairman of Christie's Middle East & Africa. The exhibition spans two floors: the ground floor features older works, including Mater's first painting of his home village and a room dedicated to his influences, such as his mother Fatimah Hassan Abdullah, while the first floor presents recent pieces and plans for his upcoming land art installation 'Ashab Al-Lal' in Wadi AlFann, AlUla desert, shown in the UK for the first time. Notable works include 'Evolution of Man' (2010), 'Talisman X-Ray Blue (Torso)' (2009), 'Illumination IX & X' (2009), 'Lightning Lzand' (2017), 'Gas Station' (2013), 'Magnetism' (2009), 'Magnetism Book' (2024), and 'Boundary' (2024), a hand-carved wooden gate resembling a mihrab that lights up and beeps like an airport security gate. The exhibition also includes a corridor with stained-glass windows. Moumni previously organized 'Kawkaba: Highlights from the Barjeel Art Foundation' with Sultan Sooud El Qassemi in 2023, which paved the way for this show. The retrospective runs until 22 August.
