exhibition · 2026-04-23

From March 8 to June 8, 2025, UCCA Edge in Shanghai will host 'Ahmed Mater: Antenna,' the first major solo exhibition of a Saudi contemporary artist in China. This event is organized in partnership with the Visual Arts Commission of the Saudi Ministry of Culture and curated by UCCA Director Philip Tinari. The exhibition showcases over 100 pieces from Mater's career, including photography, installation, sculpture, video, painting, and found objects. It coincides with the Saudi Chinese Cultural Year 2025, celebrating 35 years of diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and China. Mater, born in 1979 in Tabuk and residing in Riyadh, explores the socio-cultural and economic changes in Saudi Arabia. Featured series include 'X-Ray' (2003–2004), 'Magnetism' (2009–2024), 'Desert of Pharan' (2012–2015), and 'Illuminations' (2013–2025).
