Ahmad AlAreef Creates Fan for Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi
Emirati artist Ahmad AlAreef designed a custom fan for the lobby of the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi. The fan, which took six months to complete, draws on Abu Dhabi's cultural heritage, specifically pearl diving and its over 200 islands. AlAreef used pearls to represent the islands, and the tassel is modeled after nose clips worn by pearl divers. The wooden ribs were inspired by dhow boats and crafted with a local Emirati carpenter. The fabric's blue hue was determined by averaging photographs of the Abu Dhabi sea at different times, so the fan blends with the view when held to a window. AlAreef, known for his research-based practice exploring history and heritage, previously created the immersive installation Physiognomy, Land and Territory at Louvre Abu Dhabi in 2022. He emphasized working with local artisans and community engagement for the project.
