Ahlam Shibli's Dissonant Belonging at luma Westbau explores Palestinian life through participatory photography.
Ahlam Shibli, a Palestinian photographer born in 1970, redefines the norms of documentary photography by actively engaging in her projects. Her retrospective exhibition, titled Dissonant Belonging, is currently on display at luma Westbau in Zürich, running until 8 September 2024. Among her notable series are Horse Race in Jericho (1997), Unrecognised (1999–2000), Positioning (1997–2002), Eastern LGBT (2004/06), and Death (2011–12), which was featured at the 35th Bienal de São Paulo on 6 September 2023. The series Death delves into the theme of martyrdom in Nablus, particularly in the Balata refugee camp. In her 2013 essay, Shibli employs the term martyr (shaheed) to call for an end to occupation, addressing issues of displacement, identity, and resistance throughout 76 years of Palestinian history.
