Agrigento 2025 Foundation in Turmoil After President's Abrupt Resignation

Giacomo Minio, professor of Applied Economics to Cultural Heritage at the University of Palermo, abruptly resigned as president of the Fondazione Agrigento 2025 on January 25, citing political interference from Mayor Miccichè. The foundation, operational only since January 18, is tasked with implementing Agrigento's program as Italian Capital of Culture 2025. Minio's resignation letter claimed he was asked to step down to allow a political change. Maria Teresa Cucinotta, former Prefect of Palermo until 2023, has been proposed as his successor by the Empedocle Consorzio Universitario Agrigento (ECUA), with ratification expected imminently. The resignation highlights ongoing tensions between regional politics and cultural management. Agrigento faces severe infrastructural issues including water shortages, waste management, road decay, and abandoned public spaces, despite receiving €4 million from the Sicilian region in 2024 and an additional €3 million for 2025. Many PNRR-funded projects are delayed. Critics argue the capital of culture title cannot solve deep-rooted administrative failures.
