Agorà: Science and Mathematics from the Ancient Mediterranean at Casale di Santa Maria Nova

The exhibition 'Agorà – Scienza e matematica dal Mediterraneo antico' at the Casale di Santa Maria Nova in the Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica in Rome reimagines science as a shared, public practice. Curated by the Unità Relazioni con il Pubblico e Comunicazione Integrata del CNR, the show runs until January 11. It features 20 interactive stations that allow visitors to experiment with ancient scientific methods. The first section focuses on Archimedes as a foundational figure, while the second, 'Il Mediterraneo oltre Archimede', presents a constellation of thinkers including Pythagoras, Euclid, Plato, Aristotle, Eratosthenes, Apollonius of Perga, Heron, and Hypatia. The exhibition draws conceptual links to Joseph Beuys' social sculpture, Nicolas Bourriaud's relational aesthetics, and the geometric traditions of Piero della Francesca and Sol LeWitt. It emphasizes that knowledge emerges from collective discussion rather than isolated expertise, positioning the Casale itself as an integral part of the experience.
