AGO Modena: Carlo Ratti and Italo Rota's Cultural Hub to Open by 2027

A major cultural hub is taking shape in Modena at the former Sant'Agostino Hospital, a project originally envisioned by Gae Aulenti before her death in 2012. The new masterplan, led by Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota in collaboration with AGO Modena Fabbriche Culturali, aims to create an interdisciplinary center spanning 22,000 square meters. The first phase of construction, covering about 10,000 square meters, began in November 2021 and is expected to be completed by 2024, with full completion targeted for 2027. The project features a triangular piazza with a kinetic roof co-designed by artist-engineer Chuck Hoberman, formerly of NASA, allowing flexible use depending on weather. Founding partners include the Municipality of Modena, Fondazione di Modena, and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Key institutions already involved are Fondazione Modena Arti Visive (FMAV), Museo della Figurina, the University Museums, the Digital Humanities Research Center DHMoRe, and Future Education Modena (FEM). The AGO Foundation was established in July 2023, led by executive president Donatella Pieri, to coordinate cultural activities. The restoration approach, guided by architect Francesco Doglioni, emphasizes dynamic reconfigurability, leaving some parts intentionally unfinished to allow future evolution.
