Agnès Varda to Debut New Work at Liverpool Biennial 2018

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The Liverpool Biennial, the UK's largest temporary contemporary art event, celebrates its 20th anniversary from July 14 to October 28, 2018. Under the theme 'Beautiful World, Where Are You?', it will feature over 40 artists from 22 countries across 15 sites and 11 civic buildings. Belgian filmmaker Agnès Varda, a Nouvelle Vague pioneer, will present her first UK production, a multi-screen video installation titled '3 Mouvements' (working title), commissioned by Liverpool Biennial and FACT. The work combines excerpts from her films 'Vagabond' (1985), 'Documenteur' (1981), and 'The Gleaners' (2000). Additionally, Varda will show her film 'Ulysse' (1982) alongside a photograph she took in 1954, and a large-scale photographic installation '5 rêveurs' (2012). A weekly screening program and a curated film selection will accompany the presentation. Biennial director Sally Tallant stated that Varda was an immediate choice, noting the significance of her UK debut near her 90th birthday. Varda herself reflected on the biennial's theme, emphasizing artists' duty to build beauty despite the presence of evil.
