Agnès Varda's Photographic Archive Revealed in São Paulo Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-19

The Instituto Moreira Salles in São Paulo opens an exhibition on November 29, presenting 200 photographs by Agnès Varda, many previously unseen. This show, part of the França-Brasil Temporada, highlights her lesser-known photographic work, connecting it to contemporary issues like feminism and anti-racism. Curated by João Fernandes and Rosalie Varda, the display includes images from her travels to China, Cuba, and the United States, capturing revolutionary movements. After her death in 2019, her family discovered boxes containing 28,000 negatives and prints from the 1950s and 1960s, now housed at the Institut pour la Photographie in Lille. The exhibition also features two key films, 'Salut les Cubains' (1963) and 'Black Panthers' (1967-68), with permanent screenings. Varda's first exhibition in 1954 was held in her home-atelier on Rue Daguerre in Paris, where she lived until her death. The show runs alongside a film program of 20 of her works at the IMS.
