Agnes Pelton's 'Desert Transcendentalist' exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art

From March 13 to June 28, 2020, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City showcased 'Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist.' This exhibition highlighted the symbolic abstractions of Agnes Pelton, a mystical abstract painter and feminist trailblazer. Pelton gained recognition following Maurice Tuchman's exhibition in 1986, having studied at Pratt Institute and participated in the 1913 Armory Show. In 1931, she relocated to Cathedral City, California, where she produced visionary works inspired by Theosophy. Notable pieces included 'Even Song' (1934), 'Memory' (1937), and 'The Primal Wing' (1933). Originally launched at the Phoenix Art Museum in 2019, the exhibition faced disruptions due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving its future uncertain, though the catalogue remained available for purchase.
