AG&P greenscape on Managing the Construction of Milan's Biblioteca degli Alberi

The Biblioteca degli Alberi (Library of Trees) park in Milan opened to the public in late October 2018. Designed by Petra Blaisse's studio Inside-Outside, it is the city's third-largest park, featuring over 500 trees arranged in a complex layout that connects three neighborhoods. AG&P greenscape, a multidisciplinary landscape architecture firm, served as the executive project manager, overseeing construction from 2017. In an interview, partners Paolo Villa, Emanuele Bortolotti, and Paolo Palmulli discussed the challenges of coordinating 22 distinct 'forests,' selecting trees from nurseries, and collaborating with specialists for herbaceous perennials (by Piet Oudolf) and other plantings. The park's design reflects a heavily infrastructured approach rooted in 1980s European landscape architecture, akin to Parc de la Villette in Paris. Despite initial public concerns about over-cementification, the park has been well-received, with high visitor numbers and adaptive uses like children colonizing the sports area. AG&P previously worked on the temporary Wheatfield installation by Agnes Denes in Porta Nuova in 2014.
