Afterall Symposium: Apt-Art and Trekhprudny Squat as Artist-Curated Case Studies

The Afterall 'Artist as Curator' symposium featured a talk by Ekaterina Degot titled 'Apt-Art and the Trekhprudny Squat as Case Studies of Artists Curating', followed by a discussion with Elena Crippa and Lucy Steeds. Degot, an art historian and curator based in Moscow, examined 'fake' galleries in 1980s and early 1990s Moscow, including the Apt-art (apartment-art) gallery and Trekhprudny Squat. She contrasted 'underground' art as an alternative to the market with 'unofficial' Soviet art that critically reflected on a non-market institutional system. The symposium was held in 2023, with video documentation available. Degot's curatorial work includes the 1st Ural Industrial Biennial (2010) and the First Bergen Assembly (2013).
