Afterall's Hiding in Plain Sight Programme Explores Darkness and the Undercommons
Afterall has launched 'Hiding in Plain Sight', a programme drawing on Fred Moten and Stefano Harney's concept of the 'undercommons' to encourage arts practitioners, theorists, and students to work outside institutional frameworks. The project uses darkness and shadows as metaphors for new modes of thought, referencing Simone Browne's work on Blackness and surveillance. Events include a talk by Malaysia-based artist Sharon Chin on her work 'Creatures on the Move (In the Death of the Night)' (2022), an artist talk by London-based R.I.P. Germain at Central Saint Martins, and a silent disco dance party with Teya Logos and CSM's Spatial Radio. The programme also features an essay 'Notes on dark archives: Transforming colonial photographs using alternative analogue processes' by Degan & Hassan.
