Afterall releases video archive of Charles Gaines talk and other Exhibition Histories events

Afterall has launched a video archive showcasing its Exhibition Histories Talks series. One notable discussion features Charles Gaines, Louis Hartnoll, and John Tain, who dive into 'The Theater of Refusal: Black Art and Mainstream Criticism,' addressing issues of structural racism by examining the relationship between African-American art and how it's critiqued. Also, Malaysia's Sharon Chin shares her project 'Creatures on the Move (In the Death of the Night)' (2022) as part of the 'Hiding in Plain Sight' initiative. Another video highlights Estefanía Peñafiel Loaiza in a conversation about Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's 'Can the Subaltern Speak?' alongside Afterall's Elisa Adami and Alex Schady from CSM Art Programme. Additionally, a two-part symposium, 'Precarious Solidarities: Artists for Democracy (1974–77),' was held on February 2, 2023, organized by Afterall in partnership with Bard College, Asia Art Archive, and the University of Gothenburg, with support from the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, curated by Wing Chan and David Morris.
