Afterall Publishes 'Reshaping the Field: Arts of the African Diasporas on Display'

Afterall has unveiled the thirteenth entry in its Exhibition Histories Series, titled 'Reshaping the Field: Arts of the African Diasporas on Display.' This 268-page volume is dedicated solely to African diasporic art exhibitions in the US and UK. Edited by Nana Adusei-Poku, the book explores groundbreaking exhibitions that have influenced contemporary Black art, highlighting the ways in which Black artists have organized and carved out spaces for their creations. It features insights from artists, art historians, curators, and theorists regarding the sociopolitical contexts crucial to this field's development. The publication includes essays on significant exhibitions like 'Two Centuries of Black American Art,' 'Freestyle,' and 'Transforming the Crown.' Released in 2022, it was associated with the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and distributed by various publishers. The launch coincided with the online event held from November 4–6, 2021, organized by Adusei-Poku.
