Afterall Publishes Exhibition Histories Book on 1989 Third Havana Biennial
"Making Art Global (Part 1): The Third Havana Biennial 1989" has just been released by Afterall Books as part of their Exhibition Histories series. This book delves into the 1989 Bienal de La Habana, highlighting its impact on the global contemporary art scene and how it reshaped the biennial concept. Rachel Weiss contributes the main essay, while renowned curator Gerardo Mosquera offers his insights. It also includes archival pieces from 1989-90 by Luis Camnitzer, Coco Fusco, Geeta Kapur, and Mirko Lauer, alongside fresh writings from Charles Esche and Mosquera. The volume features interviews with artists like Alex Ángeles, José Bedia, Alfredo Márquez, and Lázaro Saavedra, plus 105 color and 18 black-and-white images. Released in partnership with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven in 2011, it can be found via Koenig Books and ARTBOOK | D.A.P.
