Afterall Presents Martha Rosler's 'The Bowery' at Lethaby Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From Tuesday, September 30 to Saturday, October 25, 2014, the Lethaby Gallery at Central Saint Martins will host an exhibition featuring Martha Rosler's influential work, 'The Bowery in two inadequate descriptive systems' (1974-75). This piece includes 24 black panels displaying 21 photographs of New York's Bowery district, alongside 24 text images and three empty spaces. Rosler's work explores the intersection of art and political documentary, challenging the notions of representation in documentary photography through contrasts of image versus text and presence versus absence. Archival materials and a book by Steve Edwards from Afterall's One Work series will be included. Luminous Books will offer a curated selection of titles with Rosler's input. An essay by Elena Filipovic from Afterall journal issue 15 will be available for free during the exhibition. Admission is complimentary, with visiting hours from Tuesday to Friday, 12:00-18:00, and Saturday, 12:00-17:00. The exhibition is made possible by support from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.
